Newcity Summer Issue

I had the opportunity to design Newcity’s entire Summer 2018 issue, which featured a series of short essays, fiction, and poetry about summers in Chicago. I developed a pretty simple two-column grid for the text pages, which then had the flexibility to allow paragraphs and headlines to wrap around each other and form negative space on each page. These stories were then combined with an evocative photo essay by Monica Kass Rogers.

The text-heavy layout was balanced with some full-page orange textures, created by scanning a melting popsicle, as well as spray-paint stencil typography and neon stickers.
